Static Timing a Points Ignition Engine

This is an operation that is vital for correct engine power, fuel economy and to prolong engine life. This video will cover how to find compression on #1 cylinder, fit the distributor, static time it in a few ways, fit the HT leads in the correct place & the correct order. I filmed the first video about 20 yrs ago.

In the next video I filmed in 2024, I remove & replace the distributor in different ways & static time it in several ways.

 

Below are some common V8 cylinder arrangements with the firing order.

Holden

1-2-7-8-4-5-6-3

Ford Windsor

1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8

Ford Windsor & Clevland 302

1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

Chev

1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

The firing order for a four cylinder is 1-3-4-2 with some very rare ones as 1-2-4-3 as in ancient vintage engines.

and for a six cylinder I have never come across anything other than 1-5-3-6-2-4, but there is another

and it is for older engines 1-4-2-6-3-5 and some diesels.
