Finding Exact TDC |
The most important reference point on your engine is the Top Dead Centre (TDC) mark on the front harmonic balancer of the engine. It is referenced to a lot when talking about various engine repairs and adjustment, so the need for it to be accurate is paramount. Engines with a one piece balancer will not need to have this procedure carried out as the balancer does not slip out of position, however a chewed out keyway will allow the pulley to move out of position. If this happens, you will actually pick this up if you follow the checking procedure. This video is only for harmonic balancers that are two piece and therefore over time will eventually slip and cause the mark to not represent the TDC reference accurately. Ignition timing is the most obvious adjustment that will not be set correctly if there is an error in the balancer mark. The first video covers two methods that are available to you to check the accuracy of the mark. The second video is using the two person method. |
